Tricalcium phosphate is also known as calcium orthophosphate or tertiary calcium phosphate.
It is defined as E 341(iii). Its chemical formula is Ca3(PO4)2 and its molar mass is 310.18 g/mol. Density 3.14 ×103 kg/m3
It is white, odorless, stable in air and in powder form. While it is practically insoluble in water (0.002 g in 100 g of water), it is easily soluble in dilute hydrochloric acid and nitric acid. It is insoluble in ethanol. At 1670 K (1391°C), it can liquefy under high pressure.
Orthophosphate salts are formed from phosphoric acid, a tribasic acid, by replacing one, two or all three of the hydrogen ions with other positive ions. The main characteristics that determine the important properties of phosphates are; chain length and pH. These affect the usability of phosphates, promoting buffering strength, chelating power, dispersion and absorptive capabilities and solubility. Tricalcium phosphate, which has a high pH between 8.5 and 9.0, does not have any corrosive effect.
It is found naturally in phosphorus rocks in a few countries, mainly Morocco, Israel, the Philippines, Egypt and Russia. Its state in nature is not completely pure. There are impurities such as sand and lime. Tricalcium phosphate is obtained from carefully selected phosphorus rocks, as well as from sodium bicarbonate (soda) ash and phosphoric acid.
Usage areas:
Tricalcium phosphate, which can also be used to enrich products with calcium at the most reasonable cost; It also acts as an absorbent and an anti-caking and buffering agent in foods.
Tricalcium phosphate, which is widely used in dry drink mixes; It also finds use as an embossing agent in some products.
