Stearic acid is a saturated fatty acid represented by the formula CH3(CH2)16COOH.
In most animal and plant fats and oils, the glyceride is usually found in the form of stearin.
Stearic acid and its compounds, especially salts (stearates) are of commercial importance. Long chain alcohol esters are known as waxes.
Stearic acid is obtained from animal fats by hydrolysis.
The commercial product is usually a mixture of stearic, palmitic and other fatty acids.
It can be separated as a pure substance by fractional distillation.
Pure stearic acid is in the form of white crystals.
Density is 0.847, melting point is 69-70°C, boiling point is 383°C
Application Suggestion:
Stearic acid can be used between 10% and 15% of the amount of paraffin used to make the wax more durable and burn longer.
