Defoamers (defoamers) are additives that prevent a solution or emulsion from forming foam by reducing its surface tension. Commonly used defoamers are insoluble oils, dimethyl polysiloxanes, stearates and glycols. Defoamers can be used both to prevent the formation of foam and to destroy the existing foam.
Defoamers can be found in emulsion, solution or concentrated form. The advantage of emulsions is that they have perfected particle sizes and compatibility for maximum effect even in the final addition step or in voids.
The most important characteristic of defoamers is that they are surfactant and water soluble. Its surfactant feature enables defoamers to spread easily on all air-supply interfaces. Some defoamers contain hydrophobic silicate particles that penetrate into the bubbles that make up the foam, allowing them to coalesce.
In industrial applications, antifoam and defoam agents are widely used in many areas in order to reduce costs, prevent raw material damage and take precautions against potential hazards. Foam control ensures efficient production and high quality product objectives are achieved.
Defoamers are antifoam agents used in many industrial applications. Defoamers produced in various formulations can be examined under 3 main headings according to their usage areas:
1. Defoamers for treatment plants:
Foam formation in the waste treatment process can cause serious problems. It can cause dangers such as foam formation, overflow of the tank, clogging of the filters, air entrapment in the pump, failure of the level sensors.
In order to prevent such hazards in waste treatment plants, emulsion silicone defoamers are generally used. Silicone defoamers can be effective over a wide pH and temperature range.
It is used in process stages such as defoamers, balancing tanks, digesters, aeration pools in the purification process.
2. Defoamers for fermentation:
In the production process of fermented products, foam formation is observed due to the mixing process. Carbon dioxide bubbles formed on the surface of the tank adversely affect the respiration of bacteria.
Defoamers are used to prevent the risk of overflow in the fermentation tanks and to efficiently utilize the volume of the equipment. Natural oils (soybean oil, corn oil), polyether, silicone defoamers can be used as defoamers in fermented products. The use of natural oils as defoamer can lead to an increase in acidity if the environmental conditions are not met.
3. Other defoamers for the food industry:
Overflow of tanks in food production is an undesirable situation that causes high costs. Existing capacity cannot be used, efficiency decreases and food processing time increases. In this sense, the importance of defoamers in the food industry is undeniable.
Defoamers in foods are generally used to prevent overflow and foaming during production.
It is widely used in carbonated diet drinks. Apart from these, the silicone oil used in the frying oil prevents the foaming that will occur during the frying process.
Defoamers are also used in mixing, bottle filling, distillation, emulsion polymerization and filtration processes.
