Potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3) (also called potassium hydrogen carbonate or potassium acid carbonate) is a colorless, odorless, basic, salty substance.
Potassium bicarbonate is water soluble and is often added to bottled water to improve its taste. However, it is not soluble in alcohol. It is usually found in crystalline or powder form. It is obtained by chemical reaction of potassium carbonate with water and carbon dioxide. Natural potassium bicarbonate is known as the calcinite mineral and is found in nature in small amounts.
There is no proven theory that potassium bicarbonate has a carcinogenic effect and does not have a toxic effect on the environment.
Potassium bicarbonate is used as a source of carbon dioxide, which provides rise in bakery products. It is used in powdered fire extinguishing agents. It is used as a buffering agent in many medical drugs.
