Beeswax is a bee product secreted by the wax glands in the last 4 pairs of abdominal rings of 23-week-old young worker bees, solidified as a result of contact with the air as it comes out of the abdominal rings, turns into scaly, turns white when secreted and then darkens.

The bee makes hexagonal pores, which we call honeycombs, with wax.

While beeswax is insoluble in water, it dissolves in ether and chloroform.

In order for bees to produce 1 kg of wax, they need to eat 615 kg of honey, which shows how valuable beeswax is.

Beeswax contains monoesters, diesters, triesters, hydroxy and poly esters, acid and polyesters, long chain hydrocarbons and long chain fatty acids in varying proportions. The rates are roughly as follows:

Alkali esters: 72%

Free fatty acids: 14%

Hydrocarbons: 11%

Free alcohols: 1%

Unknown substances: 2%

The melting temperature of wax is 6265°C and its density is 0.95. Therefore, when dissolved, it collects on the water.

Beeswax is a more important bee product than honey, especially in Africa, Central and South America. Beeswax production is traditionally done by melting the honeycomb crumbs in hot water, transferring the mixture to another container by straining, and obtaining the solid mass formed by the wax collected on the water after it cools. In addition, solar powered wax melting pots can also be used. Melting the browned old honeycombs and turning them into wax is a process that should not be neglected in terms of disease control.

The main use of beeswax is beekeeping. Because beeswax is the main raw material of the honeycombs that bees fill with honey. However, this valuable product is also wasted together with the honeycomb consumed.

Usage areas:

Beeswax is used in the cosmetics industry in the production of various body care creams, face masks, lotions, lipsticks, oils and lip balms.

In candle making, it is a very important raw material because it burns longer with its smokeless and unique smell. Since candles lit in Catholic churches must contain at least 32% beeswax, it is also used in candle production in significant quantities. Since it opens the respiratory organs and prevents the formation of sputum, it is recommended to light candles made of fresh beeswax in the rooms of patients with cough, whooping cough, asthma, sinusitis and hay fever.

It is used in the production of various creams and ointments in the pharmaceutical industry and dentistry, and in the coating of some pills.

It finds some use in waterproof materials, furniture and floor polishes, polishing optical lenses, gums and inks.

Yellow wax is used to polish parquet, to make sculptures, some paints and candles.

Purified, cleaned white beeswax is mainly used in the pharmaceutical industry and in the production of creams.

Vegetable wax is used in soap making.

Beeswax should be 100% pure in terms of all usage areas and should not contain foreign materials such as paraffin, ceresin, resin and tallow.
