The hydrometer, which is made of glass, has a weight at one end to keep it upright in the liquid, and a cylindrical handle at the other end.
The density (eng. Specific Gravity – SG) measured with a hydrometer is called SG for short.
In water, the hydrometer stands at 1,000. When you add sugar, the SG increases and the hydrometer rises.
Cleaning:
Rinse your hydrometer with warm (not boiling) water, then soak it in a suitable sterile mixture for at least 30 minutes to sterilize it. At the end of this period, rinse with a sterile mixture of one teaspoon of sodium metabisulfite and 4.5 liters of water.
Reading SG:
Take your measurement when the hydrometer stops oscillating and does not touch any wall of the container. Take the measurement by referring to the bottom of the liquid surface, which is in the curved position in the container you are measuring.
