Total Water Hardness Measurements with AQUAX Test Kit

The hardness of water can be approximately measured with the Total Water Hardness Test Kit.

AQUAX is designed as a Single Reagent (Water Hardness Solution) for easy, fast and accurate determination of water quality with the Titrimetric Method. With the drip-and-see application method, it gives reliable results in a few seconds.

Test Method

After shaking the sample cup (test tube) two or three times with the water to be analyzed, 5 mL of sample water is taken.

It is mixed by dropping 1 drop of Reagent (Water Hardness Solution) solution onto the sample.

a) If the sample has hardness, the color will change to red-pink after the first drop.

b) If there is no hardness in the sample (close to zero), the color will turn green-blue after the first drop. In this case, the test is terminated and the hardness is reported as zero.

If the color is red-pink, the test is continued by adding one drop of the reagent solution. Color is checked by mixing after each drop.

The test is terminated when the sample color turns green-blue.

Result: The number of drops spent at the end of the experiment is recorded as German Hardness (°dH).

1 drop = 1 German Hardness (°dH).

Hardness Unit Cycles:

1 German Hardness (°dH) =1.78 French Hardness (°fH) = 17.8 mg/L CaCO3

What is Water Hardness?

Water is a good solvent and also easily collects impurities. Pure water is tasteless, colorless, odorless and is often referred to as a universal solvent. As water flows through the soil and over cliffs, it dissolves and retains very little minerals. Calcium and magnesium dissolved in water are the two most important substances that make water “hard.” The degree of hardness increases as the calcium – magnesium content increases and the concentration of dissolved cations in the water increases.

Why Is Water Hardness Important?

Many industrial and domestic water users are concerned about the hardness of their water. You may have literally felt the effects of hard water the last time you washed your hands. Depending on the hardness of your water, you may have felt like a residue or film remained after using soap to wash your hands. In hard water, soap reacts with calcium (which is relatively high in hard water) to form "soap scum". When using hard water, more soap or detergent is needed to clean your hands, hair or laundry well.

Also, after removing glassware from the dishwasher, you may notice some flecks or a white film layer on them. This is actually hard water residue, not dangerous, but doesn't look good. When hard water is used to heat the water in a domestic water heater, solid calcium carbonate deposits can form. This can shorten the life of the product, increase water heating costs, reduce the efficiency of electric water heaters and clog pipes. Hard water can also shorten the life of fabrics and clothing.

Water quality and water hardness are very important parameters both in industry and in daily life and must be constantly monitored.

Water Hardness Values
The general rules for the classification of waters are as follows:

German Hardness dºH

French Hardness fºH

CaCO 3 (mg/L or ppm) Calcium Carbonate
