Use of:

The pH paper is pressed to the material to be measured. (Liquid is immersed in it.)
It is removed after about 1 second and the pH value is checked by comparing it with the color scale.

pH cannot be determined if the acid or base density is less than 0.01%.
Acidity Degree (pH) of Aquarium Water

The pH level of aquarium water is affected by all acidic and basic substances dissolved in it.
With the pH of the water, the total effect of all these substances is measured.
The more acidic substances in the water, the lower the pH value. In chemistry, acidic water tends to gain electrons, and basic water tends to donate.


The pH range of 5.5 - 8.5 is generally important for freshwater aquariums. The pH level of most fresh water sources is also between these values. For example, pH values in various parts of Lake Malawi in Africa are between 7.5 and 8.5 (basic), while most parts of tropical Amazon waters have pH below 6.5. (Acitic)

The pH value of water has become very important in aquarism. Every fish or plant species requires pH values within certain limits in order to live healthy.
While some species survive in a wide pH range such as 6.5 - 8.5, some require special (acitic) water conditions such as 5.5 - 6.5.
Rapid pH changes in water are dangerous.

Often times, it is more important to keep the pH stable than the absolute pH of the water. Because fish, plants and microorganisms are extremely adversely affected by sudden pH changes.
Bicarbonate hardness plays an important role in keeping the pH level of the water in balance. In general, the higher the bicarbonate hardness of the water, the higher the pH and the easier it is to stabilize.
For example, as bicarbonate hardness increases, daily pH oscillations due to the amount of carbon dioxide in the aquarium will decrease. This is partly why it is difficult to care for fish that require low pH levels (5.5-6.5), such as discus. Since the bicarbonate hardness of the water will be low at these pH values, it becomes difficult to keep the pH in balance.

It is recommended to use peat (German peat, English peat) filter material for fish that require acidic water, many of which originate from the Amazon River.
The most important substance affecting the pH value in an aquarium is carbon dioxide. The more carbon dioxide in the water, the lower the pH. During the day, plants take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen during photosynthesis. Therefore, in planted aquariums, the pH level is at its lowest point in the morning when the light is first turned on, and reaches its highest point in the evening when the light is turned off.
